METAL SHIP DECK — A VAST TENTACLED COSMIC CREATURE FILLING THE SKY ABOVE A PLANET. Cosmo, Nova and Stella stand on the deck and look up, wide-eyed, at a creature so enormous it blots out the stars. The first read is horror — a monster, a doom. But look again at three faces: they are not screaming, they are not fleeing. They are wide-eyed in the specific way of children at a fireworks finale. The deck makes the sublime's oldest secret plain: awe and terror arrive in the same body, with the same widened eyes, and the only difference is the story you tell about it. The creature is mysterious, not malicious.
