Cosmo counts the pipes — dozens of them, every one a different length, a different size, a different voice — and braces for noise, for a hundred sounds quarreling. Then he understands the architecture. The pipes are not competing. They are one instrument. Each different length exists precisely so the organ can say something no single pipe could.
