Cosmo holds a tablet and studies a golden humanlike form suspended inside a specimen jar; Nova floats near the books. He came to observe it — to note, measure, file. But the figure has a face, and faces are difficult: the longer you study a face, the harder it gets to keep calling it a specimen. Somewhere between the third observation and the fourth, the jar stops containing a sample and starts containing a someone.
