PALE PLATEAU — FLOATING IRIDESCENT CRYSTALS, FOUR FRIENDS IN A ROW. The burned line reads what is essential is invisible to the eye, and the scene proves it twice over. All around the four, crystals blaze and refract and demand to be looked at — pure spectacle, pure surface. And in the middle of all that visible glory stand Cosmo, Nova, Stella and Luna, doing the one thing the crystals can't: simply being together. The bond between them throws no light. It has no facets. The eye slides right past it to the prettier rocks. But take the four away and the plateau is just expensive scenery. The essential thing was never glowing.
