Small Cosmo looks up at a great Nova figure made of stained-glass mosaic, a glowing heart at her chest, a tiny crown on her head. He sees her wholeness, her radiance, her crown — and feels the gap between that and his own ordinary, ungilded self. Then he steps closer. The radiant figure is not carved from one flawless gem. She is built from hundreds of small, separately broken tiles, each one cracked at its edges, all of them set together. The wholeness was never the absence of breakage.
