Cosmo points at the drifting jellyfish while Nova hovers, but the eye keeps returning to the great folded coral lit from within. Cosmo assumes the brain coral was named for a coincidence — coral that happens to look like a brain. Then he watches it glow, fold answering fold, the light moving through its channels the way thought moves. And it stops being a coincidence and becomes a clue. The coral grew, slowly, the most efficient shape for holding the most surface in the least space — and a mind, growing toward the same goal, arrived at the same folds. The reef wasn't imitating a brain.
